Things that make a watch water-proof

There are 3 points from where water can enter a watch.

  • Glass edges on top of the watch
  • Crown
  • Back of the watch

A watch must have high precision in its making to plug all these 3 points to make the watch water resistant. Glass needs to be of perfect dimensions and needs to be backed by a washer which expands under pressure and seals it. Likewise watch back besides being of accurate dimension also has to have a washer which seals the edges further. The same principle applies to the crown as well. For effective water resistance all these 3 aspects need to be perfect.

Water Resistance versus Water Proof

Water resistance is different than water-proof. The precision needed in water proof is even higher than water resistant watches. Water proof can offer protection even in 30 to 50 or even 100 meters of depth [where pressure of water is a lot higher]. Its ability to offer protection against water at varied depth is a function of precision of components.

Water resistance watch means that the watch will work fine even if one accidently wears it while taking a shower but it can be damage if one takes it for a swim [or will only hold good for shallow depths]. While a waterproof watch would mean that it will work fine even if one takes it for a swim or a dive.

Key Components of Water Resistance

The water resistance of a watch depends on several critical factors:

  • Washers and Gaskets: These are used at the glass edges, crown, and back of the watch to prevent water entry. High-quality washers made of rubber or silicone provide superior sealing and expand under pressure.
  • Material Quality: The materials used in the casing, glass, and crown play a significant role. Stainless steel or ceramic casings, paired with sapphire crystal glass, offer better resistance against water intrusion.

03

Maintaining Water Resistance Over Time

Water resistance isn't permanent and can degrade over time due to wear and tear. Regular maintenance is essential to ensure long-term protection:

  • Seal Inspection: Check the condition of washers and gaskets periodically, especially if the watch is frequently exposed to water.
  • Crown Position: Always ensure the crown is fully pushed in or screwed down before exposure to water.
  • Service Schedule: Have the watch serviced by professionals every 2–3 years to test and restore its water resistance.

Proper care can extend the life of your water-resistant or waterproof watch and maintain its reliability.
