What are the various grades of metal used in a watch chain?

Watch case as well as Chain though look metallic but the metal composition can be vastly different. The metals can be steel, brass or very cheap alloy. The composition of metal determines life as well as how long will the plating on the watch, last.

Iconic watch brands use highest grade of stainless steel, which also have a protective coating to keep it, scratch free. Brass is used for somewhat cost-effective watch cases. Though Brass is also an alloy but is a very good option. A brass watchcase is usually paired with stainless steel back, which gives it protection against sweat.

Stainless steel is preferred ingredient for chains. Human sweat is acidic in nature – so the metal can get corroded when it comes in touch with sweat. Hence stainless steel is safer and more durable option for a watch chain. The chain can be semi-solid [links have hollow space inside them] as well as completely solid.

What is the issue of Alloys:

Alloy usually doesn’t have as good life as Steel. Cheaper alloys will start getting tarnished in a matter of weeks. Life of plating is usually significantly lower on surface of alloy.
